Concerns
- carbon footprint of travel
- also stress footprint, especially when public transport is dealing with an incident, which is a lot of the time
- expense of owning and maintaining office
- office facilities are clinical and lowest common denominator, whereas what i have at home is tailored
- this is not true for everyone, and remote-first is not a threat to them
- the office isn't even necessarily well climate controlled
- offices are noisy in a way that ruins concentration
- wfh tech has existed for decades, and we may never have seen its full potential were it not for the pandemic
The real motivation
- encouraging people to leave
- narcissistic need to have rows of employees in sight
- low trust environment
- or pervy need to see smartly dressed young people who can't refuse
- avoid cabin fever-induced liz truss syndrome in middle management i.e. off the scale hubris in own capabilities
